Hay Fever Help

The greatest wealth is Health.

If you’ve ever spent a spring or summer sneezing your way through sunny days, you’ll know hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) can be more than just a “bit of pollen.” For some people, symptoms go beyond itchy eyes and runny noses — fatigue, brain fog, and even food sensitivities can sneak in.

One hidden player in the mix?  —MAST CELLS , these are tiny but mighty immune cells that can overreact when triggered.

 What are they?

Mast cells are part of your immune defence team, and are located in tissues like your nose, lungs, skin, and gut. Their job is to release chemical messengers (like histamine) when they detect something harmful.

In theory, this is good news — mast cells help fight off real threats.

In practice, when they mistake harmless things (like pollen) for danger, they can cause a flood of inflammatory chemicals that leave you feeling… drained and ‘allergic’ !

What is the difference between Mast Cell Activation and  Hay Fever

In hay fever, mast cells in your nasal passages and eyes react to pollen. They release histamine, which leads to classic allergy symptoms:

    • Sneezing and nasal congestion

    • Itchy, watery eyes

    • Runny nose

    • Itchy throat or ears

In mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), mast cells can become extra sensitive, releasing histamine and other mediators in response to a much wider range of triggers — not just pollen. These triggers can include certain foods, temperature changes, stress, chemicals, or even exercise.

If you have hay fever and MCAS, pollen season can hit you like a double wave — triggering both seasonal and more systemic symptoms.

Symptoms That Go Beyond Hay Fever

When mast cells are overactive, you might notice:

    • Headaches or migraines

    • Flushing or sudden warmth in the skin

    • Fatigue and brain fog

    • Digestive upset (bloating, nausea, loose stools)

    • Hives or itchy skin

    • Sensitivity to smells, chemicals, or alcohol

Not everyone with hay fever has mast cell activation — but if your symptoms seem to flare in lots of different situations, it’s worth considering.

Why Do Mast Cells Overreact?

There’s rarely a single cause, but factors that can contribute include:

    • Chronic allergies (like hay fever) keeping mast cells on high alert

    • Gut imbalances or “leaky gut”

    • Chronic inflammation or infections

    • Hormonal changes (oestrogen can influence mast cells)

    • Nutrient deficiencies (especially vitamin C, magnesium, and B vitamins)

    • High stress, which primes the immune system to overreact

Natural Ways to Calm Mast Cell Activity

While there’s no quick fix, a combination of lifestyle and nutrition support can help calm your immune system:

1. Support your gut health

Around 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. A healthy gut lining and balanced microbiome can help reduce overactive immune responses.

2. Eat natural antihistamine foods

These include quercetin-rich foods (apples, onions, berries), vitamin C sources (kiwi, peppers, parsley), and anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric and ginger.

3. Identify & reduce personal triggers

Keep a symptom diary to track reactions — not just to pollen, but to foods, stress, temperature changes, or strong smells.

4. Consider gentle supplements

Quercetin, vitamin C, bromelain, magnesium, and omega-3s are often used to support mast cell stability — but it’s best to get professional guidance before starting.

5. Manage stress & sleep

Deep breathing, gentle exercise, meditation, and good sleep hygiene all help regulate immune responses.

When to Get Professional Help

If your hay fever feels worse than it should or your symptoms don’t fit the typical pattern, working with a nutritionist or functional health practitioner can help you identify underlying triggers and create a tailored plan.

You don’t have to live at the mercy of pollen counts and unpredictable reactions. With the right approach, it’s possible to calm your mast cells, ease hay fever symptoms, and reclaim your energy.
